Rand Paul wins GOP Senate primary in Kentucky
So-called “Tea Party” candidate Rand Paul, son of Texas Representative and Libertarian-minded activist Ron Paul, won his state’s primary over GOP challenger Trey Grayson with over 65-percent of precincts reporting.
The Rand Paul campaign had incredible confidence going into election Tuesday, winning his first ever campaign. Paul enjoyed fairly significant leads in the polls for a majority of the race, making today’s election results almost a foregone conclusion.
Paul’s Internet fund raising efforts propelled the Bowling Green eye surgeon into victory, raising over $3 million dollars during the course of his campaign.
“The Kentucky election was being watched around the country, especially after tea party activists helped to defeat three-term Sen. Bob Bennett in Utah and forced Florida Gov. Charlie Crist to abandon the GOP to make an independent run for the Senate,” wrote the Associated Press.
The Paul victory provides newfound evidence of general discontent among the voting class with their government and the representation they receive from their elected politicians.
Paul is expected to make a statement shortly.
