DHS chief accused of using no-fly list for political payback
Sunday, July 19th, 2009State treasurer suspects airport blackballing
Arizona’s state treasurer is not-so-subtly accusing President Obama’s Homeland Security chief of abusing America’s “no-fly” list to satisfy a personal vendetta against him.
State Treasurer Dean Martin told Arizona CBS affiliate KPHO that his name suddenly appeared on the government’s list of those banned from US commercial flights after former Arizona governor Janet Napolitano became head of the DHS.
Martin claims the airline blacklisting may be related to his past political rivalry with Napolitano.
“My staff used to joke after my disagreements with the previous governor that I wouldn’t be able to fly once she got back in D.C.” he told KPHO. “I didn’t believe them, but it’s actually happening.”
Martin said he first discovered his name was added to the list after a two-and-a-half hour holdup at airport security for a flight to Seattle this past weekend. He said there were no hassles the last time he flew last fall.
Napolitano was confirmed United States Secretary of Homeland Security on January 20, 2009. According to department, the majority of names on the no-fly list are “selectees” who represent a non-specific security threat and are allowed to fly after “extra scrutiny.”
Martin apparently thinks enough of the connection with Napolitano to drop the idea on the local media.
“I don’t know. We’ll find out but I do find it really interesting that I haven’t been on the terrorist watch list until just now,” he said.
Napolitano’s office responded to the accusation by saying “Dean Martin is a common name” and added they’ve made arrangements so any future issue will be resolved by Arizona treasurer entering his frequent flier number.
No word on whether the US government is also on the lookout for possible co-conspirators Frank Sinatra, Joey Bishop, and Sammy Davis Jr. for a series of 1960s casino robberies

It is yet another example of the federal government running roughshod over the states.
Last month, the state of Tennessee’s General Assembly passed House Bill 1796, the “Tennessee Firearms Freedom Act,” which states that any firearms or ammunition manufactured within the state and legally owned and kept within the state by citizens are “not subject to federal law or federal regulation, including registration” due to provisions in the Second, Ninth, and Tenth Amendments to the United States Constitution.
But according to Assistant Director Carson W. Carroll of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the U.S. Constitution is little more than a g.d. piece of paper, as George W. Bush so infamously deemed it during his reign as the decider-in-chief.
On July 16, Carroll dispatched his agency’s official response to the law passed in Tennessee — the BATFE asserts that “Federal law supersedes the Act, and all provisions of the Gun Control Act and the National Firearms Act, and their corresponding regulations, continue to apply.”
It will be interesting to see how Tennessee reacts to this official proclamation.

Bound Brook man’s reaction to video games prompts SWAT response
Sunday, July 19th, 2009A Winsor Street man was charged Tuesday with disorderly conduct following an incident Tuesday afternoon at his home that prompted a response from the Somerset County SWAT team.
The man, who has not been identified by police because the investigation is continuing, was taken to Somerset Medical Center in Somerville for psychological evaluation.
The incident began at about 3:29 p.m. when police received a call from a woman walking in the 500 block of Winsor Street that she heard screams coming from a house, police said.
A police officer responding to the home asked the resident if anything was wrong. The man said he was screaming because he was playing video games
on his television, police said.
The man then became irrational, prompting additional police response, police said.
After the officers arrived, the man became increasingly irate, refused to let the officers into the house, threatened officers and then slammed the door, police said.
As the officers continued to communicate with the man through open windows, the SWAT team was called and staged in the nearby parking lot of Bound Brook High School.
The man decided to come out of the house without incident at 4:41 p.m.
