The Wavering State of the Union

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

America is in crisis. Everyone knows something is terribly wrong, but you’d never know it by watching television. Our government assures us nothing is wrong, the news media tells us nothing is wrong, those who speak out are derided or ignored completely.

Unemployment is over 5% (over 20 million out of work). Our stock market is becoming increasingly unstable, hundreds of billions of dollars in loaned money needs to be pumped into the private sector to maintain it. This cannot be maintained indefinitely…the market will correct itself sooner rather than later and numerous major employers will go out of business. As our economy is based primarily on services rather than production, millions will have no jobs with no productive skills other than menial labor and customer service. As the people who work retail are generally living paycheck to paycheck, a massive epidemic of unemployment would devastate the United States far beyond anything seen in the 1930s.

Our deficit has surpassed eleven trillion dollars, and we are spending tens of billions each day that we are borrowing from not-so-friendly regimes and from the American taxpayer with interest..

Our spending has skyrocketed under the Bush administration. Trillions of dollars have been spent on foreign wars and failed government programs, no-bid private contractors are taking over multiple government responsibilities, all with no gain to the American people whatsoever; unless economic destitution and the antipathy of the entire world can be counted as a “gain”.

As American jobs no longer pay enough to maintain our accustomed lifestyle, we are increasingly paying for everything on credit. We even pay our utilities on credit. We heat our homes on credit. We buy grossly overpriced gas on credit. Even with the destruction of the mortgage industry in 2007, Americans cannot get by without borrowing. Sadly, this is an an apt reflection of the behavior of the Federal government.

The Federal Reserve controls all the money and gold bullion in this country. The Fed is NOT a government agency, it is a private corporation with direct ties to global banking interests in Europe. The Fed controls the money supply (which is supposed to be the government’s job) and can print money whenever it wants with no repercussions whatsoever…after all, it’s not their money that’s being devalued.

Both major political parties are financed by massive corporations.

The President has nearly unlimited power through the use of unconstitutional ’signing statements’ and executive orders which bypass the Congress and Supreme Court. This is nothing more than a modernized form of imperial decree, where something becomes law simply because the Leader decides it should be so. Our legislative and Judicial branches are powerless and seemingly unwilling to stop this.

Over the last 40 years, multiple executive orders have been implemented granting increasingly broad and unchecked power to the executive branch in the event of ‘national emergency’. The definition of ‘emergency’ is broad and not well defined. Indeed, it can be economic crisis, military invasion/terrorism, a disease pandemic, natural disaster, or even something that happens on the other side of the world, like a nuke going off in Israel or Iran.

Through executive orders the President can now:

Shut down congress for six months.

Take over all media outlets and communication grids.

Shut down all railroads, airports, and highways.

Indefinitely imprison and detain anyone the President deems to be a ‘threat to national security’.

Organize civilian ‘inmates’ into ‘work brigades’ under government supervision.

Take direct control over National Guard troops, FEMA, and state/local police.

The president is authorized to put ALL executive orders into effect in times of increased international tensions and economic or financial crisis.

The Military Commissions Act:

Eliminates Habeas Corpus for anyone the President decides to deny it to.

Prohibits any person from invoking the Geneva Conventions or their protocols as a source of human rights in any action in any US court.

On National Security Presidential Directive 51 and Homeland Security Presidential Directive 20:

The secretary of Homeland Security shall serve as the President’s lead agent in coordinating overall continuity operations and activities of executive departments and agencies. Allows the President to control and coordinate all three branches of government in the event of a ‘catastrophic emergency’. Catastrophic emergency means any incident that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the US population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or “government functions”.

NSPD/HSPD 20, 51 Section 24: Security:

It doesn’t take a massive leap of logic to conclude what the government’s response to any one of the crippling events that are threatening to destroy our way of life might be. Given the length of time their ‘contingency plans’ have been in effect, it is all too likely that we have been conned, cajoled, and placated into accepting the up and coming police state.

And if the average American doesn’t figure out that the government’s power is dependent entirely on the people accepting that power, then there is nothing that can be done but sit back and enjoy the tyranny.

The Course of Human Events

History, for those still educated or inspired enough to actually study it, is replete with incidences of tyrannical government and oppressive regimes. The establishment of the Constitutional Republic of the United States of America was a remarkable document, far ahead of it’s time in regards to it’s respect for the individual rights and freedom of all mankind. Freedom of religion, speech, the right to bear arms, to not be forced to testify, limited government, and other protections from absolute despotism made the United States the freest and most prosperous country in the world.

But time tends to blur memories, and people tend to forget the way things are supposed to be.

But we cannot afford to forget, and we are duty-bound to protect the rights we have as natural beings living on this Earth. We cannot exist as subjects of an arbitrary governing force that rules by coercion instead of consent. As free human beings, we are obligated to resist when the forces of tyranny usurp our rights to live, think, pray, eat, drink and speak as we wish.

Unconstitutional laws such as the USA PATRIOT Act and the Military Commissions Act, the suspension of Habeus Corpus and Posse Comitatus, and the establishment of an autocratic police state buit on fear, lies and deception are not what America stands for and it certainly should not be tolerated by free citizens anywhere regardless of nationality.

Freedom from fear should be the main priority of every person alive. By surrendering to fear, you give unethical and greedy men just that much more power. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin were all considered traitors to the British Empire, but fear did not prevent the formation of an independent American Republic. There is no reason why the spirit of courage and conviction cannot be rekindled amongst the population today in response to undue tyranny and repression.

With the rise of the mass media and the internet, an explosive change in human understanding and perspective has occurred. Billions now have access to the Internet, and We are Change hopes to use this new medium to reach out to everyone interested in the cause of truth, liberty, peace and freedom.
